Farm

When we went to the farm we took the the weeds from out the the ground. We also clean the weeds that came from out of the side walk we also cleaned the pavement. We learned about how different insects us water in order for them to have babies. We learned the different tools used too clean a garden like the hoe and a wheel barrel.

Community Garden/Farm

On Tuesday and Wednesday we went to a community garden/farm on schoolhouse.help dig up weeds, picked up trash, and water the plants. For me I did not like the farm/garden because it was to hot out and there were too many bugs. what I liked about it was that we was hands on and also learned that if we take care of the earth it will take care of us.Another thing I liked about it is that it caused our groups to bond with other groups. Everyone was laughing and having a good time but one thing we all could agree on is that we all was glad to go home after it.

Community Garden / Farm

Our week at the community garden / farm

Tuesday :My first day at the garden/farm was kinda hot and boring. At first I didn't like it really because it was hot. And everybody was complaining . But as the day went on things gotta little better.

Wednesday : The next day at the garden / farm was fun . It was still hot but I worked hard. Pulling weeds and watering plants were fun. Working to pass the time by with hard work .

The Community Garden

For the two days when I was at the Community Garden I learned a lot how to grow and take care of plants, fruits, and vegetables. Also I had learned how to own a community garden. • Do you sell at other places around Pennsylvania or do you just sell here in Philadelphia?

We sell almost everywhere-- the country, in Philly and Manayunk

  • Do you grow fruits? If so what kinds?

Yes we grow all types of fruits; we just sell them by the season.

  • How do you keep your foods & fruits fresh?

We store them in coolers or cool spots.

  • Do you make the prices based on how fresh the things are?

Yes it does but there are things that change this; If there is alot of a certain item, then it is cheap while if there is less of an item the cost is higher.

  • How do you know when the foods & fruits are ready to be picked?

By the smell, taste, texture

1. What types of foods are sold in these types of stores?

Food that are mainly sold in these stores are junk food because it is the easiest way to crave someones sweet tooth and this type of food is cheap. Examples of this type of food is candy, chips, soda, pre-cooked food.

2. What do all these types of stores have in common?

The Chinese, Food Way, and 7-eleven all sell pre-cooked foods, candy, chips, sodas and juices and have multiple amounts of customers that are mainly college students.

3. What is your ideal store?

My ideal store would sell a few unhealthy snacks and drinks, but also have fresh and organic foods such as fruits and vegetables and some pre-cooked foods only prepared with real and low-fat ingredients; There should also be a gym near the store where I can play ball and weight lift.

Corner Store

FOOD WAY, CHINESE STORE & 7-ELEVEN

At the corner store their was a variety of different things. They had things from hair products to beer. The similarities with all 3 stores is that each one contained junk food. The Fresh Grocer had many of healthy things while the corner stores had barely any. There are many corner stores in the city because they are quick and easy to get to. My ideal corner store has plenty of fruit, veggies and meats.

The stores we went to today were a lot different from the farmers market.
They had food like chips, ice cream, chicken, fries,Chinese food & more. one of the stores we went in had fresh fruits like the farmers market but not a lot. The coner stores needs to have more healthy things such as fruit, solid, more waters,& not alot of greasy foods.

MY IDEAL OF A CORNER STORE IS FRESH FRUIT AND VEGGIES FRESH FOOD THAT DON'T NEED STEROIDS.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT THE THREE STORES HAVE IN COMMON?
7-ELEVEN FOOD WAY CHINESE STORE HAVE IN COMMON IS CHIPS, CANDY, JUICE , GUM AND PRE COOKED FOOD ALSO LOTS OF CUSTOMERS.

My first mapping project

corner store

Today I went to the Corner store and saw soda, juice, sugar, gum, chips, slashes all kind of stuff but not fruits and veggies and the other stories.
I saw Chinese stores and seven eleven an a lot of others. I was up broad and Cecil B Moore ave on the way back.
I saw the subway to north ans south bound and a man sailing water ice, sodas.
I bout a Arizona macho mango juice..
The similarities and differences are the corner stores don't have fresh meat and there are certain foods and the fresh grocer has organic foods and meat that all is fresh .
In conclusion the Corner store is better than the market because it costs less.
But then again the market is better because it has more.

Corner Stores

The first store had a lot of beer and candy which is unhealthy. The second store (7-11) had a little bit of everything but also had a lot of unhealthy foods. The stores all sold many unhealthy foods which shows why it should be less of these stores or the stores should try and sell better produce. Fresh Grocer is a market which sells many different kinds of it is not a corner convenient store which sells mostly snacks it provides many fresh fruits and veggies. Corner stores are everywhere because people are usually in a rush which can enable them to have time to go to a market. I think corner stores are very convenient at times.

Al Mapp

Corner Stores

The 3 corner stores we went today were the 7-11, Chinese store, and food way. The types of foods they sold at the 7-11 was slushies, brownies etc. The food they sold at the Chinese Store was chicken, junk food, juice/soda, etc. The food that they sold at the Food Way store was liquor, chips, juice/sodas, lunch meat/cheese, etc.

The Differences between 7-11, the Chinese Store, and the Food Way store is that 7-11 sells slushies, the Chinese Store sell chicken, and Food Way sell liquor.

Corner Store

Today my group and I went to different such as Food way 7eleven and the chinese store corner stores and viewed the product that was sold within the stores. While in the stores I have seen many of the same products such as chips candy and other sorts of junk food. For the most part the stores pretty much sold the same products except for the few foods such as produce like apples and bananas. These store all had one thing in common within each other is that each store had some form of junk food whether it was candy, chips, chocolate or cakes and thing of the kind.
By taking this trip I have seen that there is a huge gap between serving junk and serving fresh produce. I personally believe that this is one if not the main source to obesity with in the adolescent community. By serving chips and snack at such low prices and with an abundance of the inventory people would purchase the snack rather than the scarce amount of fruit that is at a price greater than the snacks being provided at the stores.

Corner Store

The types of food that was sold at the corner stores were chips, candy, drinks, cigarettes, canned foods, and other things people need. Between all the corner stores they all sold chips, candy, and sodas. One store sold hair care products, another sold prepared foods, and the other sold Chinese Food. The corner stores had every little fresh foods unlike Fresh Grocer, where they have a wide verity of fresh foods from the fruits and vegetables to the meats. The demographic of customers at the corner store are students and the people who either work or live around the area. I think there are so many corner stores around Philadelphia because it is more convenient accessibility for people. Also most people do not feel like walking to a market unless it is in a 5 block radius. My ideal corner store is a place where they sell everything. For example Fresh Grocer sells both fresh foods and also chips. People need more choice when it comes to shopping at a corner store. Also my ideal corner store would also be connected to a community garden and everyone in the area could help out with it.

  • What type of foods were sold at corner stores ?
Ice Cream , Pizza , Shampoo , Beverages , Dried fruits , Bananas , Oranges , Apples , Magazines , Phone / Girt Cards , Etc

  • What are similarities / differences with all 3 corner stores ?
Similarities : Beverages , Junk Food , Prepared Food

Differences : Personal Items

  • Compare corner stores to Fresh Grocer
In my option none of the corners stores compare to Fresh Grocer because Fresh Grocer has more of a options to choose from than any of these stores including fresh produce .

  • What is demographic of customers at corner stores?
Different demographics such as African Americans , Asians

  • Why do you think there are so many corner stores in the city?
Because they are easier and faster to get to in your own community .

  • What is your ideal corner stores ?
My ideal corner would be something similar to a grocery store . With different foods from different cultures .

Food Way Store

Today day we went to see what was the diffrent between fresh grocer and this store well the different is that this store had beer and can food, lunch meat and juice and other product like chip and cady

7eleven

Today my group walk to 7eleven to take note about what they have heatly in the store mainly they have slopee and they have dvd, video, but they didnt have no veggie

stores

Today we went to different stores looking for what makes a healthy corner store. First we went to 7 eleven. In 7 eleven we did not see many healthy choices mostly snakes and sugary beverages. They also sold other things like DVD’s, headphones, muffins and donuts, and many different candies. Next we went to another little store called food way there they had more things than the 7 eleven. Both healthy and more house hold applies it was more as a mini market than a corner store. It contained a deli, bread, snakes, beer, jewelry, and other items. Last we went to Fresh Grocer to compare what we seen at the other stores. What we seen was that the market had many more produce than both of the stores but not applies. It had many healthy choices to choose from unlike the other two stores. I believe there are many corner stores because they have great convenience and there close by. You are able to but something if you need it and not have to go shopping at a super market. A question I asked was what is the most type of customers you see in your store? They answered mostly college students or just other citizens who live near there store.

My Day With John Street

I learned that you can't depend on no person because they not going to be there all our life

John F. Street

My Questions

1. What is your opinion on Food Health today and the problems we have with obesity?
2. How did you improve the condition of Philadelphia?

Today Jofn F. Street visited Temple with an important message to give to all of the workers of the Bits program; but instead of going through a long drawn out story he used games and prizes in order to grab our attention. Every one of her games was based around either luck or your will to concentrate on what you want. Throughout his lesson he told a little bit about his life, how he tried time after time to get where he wanted to be but was shot down due to the lack of being qualified. This inspired me to continue working my hardest at moving foward towards being a basketball/ military engineer.

Jeremy Hagins

Emani Hayward. :: John Street

Today we went to a meeting with John Street. We play 3 games with him that taught us 3 lessions. When we started the first game he pulled random names out of a hat and gave them people gifts. in that game the lesson was luck, and he was saying how not everybody is goin to have luck not everybody going to get wher they want in life by luck. you have to work hard to get where your going. The next game we played he Picked 10 people to Stand up and hold there breath. Then he picked more people to get up and try to make them laugh and who ever held there breath the longest wins the game. everyone that played that lost! lol. :). The lesson that was taught in that game was that keep focus and dont let anybody distract you from getting where you need to be. Before it was over he told us to remember a Quote that read --> A Man ( Woman ) who Throws A Stone A Every Barking Dog Will Never Get To Their Destination. My goal for when i get older I'm going to become a Nurse practitioner. If i want to accomplish my goals i will have to keep all them lessons that was learned in mind.
  • The questions I had for John Street were . . . .

Did north philadelphia have the community garden when he was younger ?

If he could be re-elected for another 4 years would he take the chance ?

  • Things I learned from his games were . . . .

Do not depend on luck .

Take chances and dont let anybody stop you .

Never lose your focus in life .

  • My future goal/detination . . . .

My future goal would be to become a criminal justice lawyer.

By : Shanese Johnson

FORMER MAYOR JOHN STREET VIST

WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM HIS GAMES?
THE LESSON I LEARNED WAS THAT YOU CAN'T ALWAYS DEPEND ON OTHER PEOPLE TO BE THEIR TO ALWAYS GIVE YOU THINGS IN LIFE YOU MAY NEED LIKE MONEY .

WHAT IS YOUR FUTURE GOAL /DESTINATION?
MY FUTURE GOAL IS TO BECOME A VENTANA FOR ANIMALS.

John F. Street Comes To Temple

Q: John F. Street Now that your are out of office are you doing any more projects to help the community.

I learned from the games that was played with John Street is that you should not be in a race where there is only one winner. It limited you to believing you are the best. Instead you should be in a race that everyone can win. And though you maybe in a race that you can win you must be focus on your goal and never get distracted.

My goal is to go to college for animal science and biology. With education I will become a Veterinarian and Zoologist. With in time I will have my on Animal Hospital and science lab were I will discover the cure for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)and Canine immunodeficiency virus (CIV).

By.: Evan Ned

John Street

The Questions I Had Prepared For John Street Was The Following:

  1. What do you think about the condition that Philadelphia is in?
  2. How do you feel about the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative being stopped?
  3. Would you run another term if you could?
  4. What do you think about conventional farming
The things I had learned about his game was that you can't depend on luck to get you by in life also to stay focused and don't let anyone distract you from your goals. My future goal is to be an International Business own and to also have my own chain of design businesses

Mill Creek

Was Mill Creek Farm similar to what you thought a farm was? When we took our trip to the Mill Creek Farm I thought it would be larger in size. Before going to the Mill Creek Farm I thought most farms were located in the country in the middle of no where. At the Mill Creek Farm I learn that a home could be built using mud, saw dust, clay, hay and this is called cob.

The farm

My prior knowledge of farming is you have to spend most of you time taking care of the crops. The Mill Creek Farm is a farm in West Philly. It is different from a typical farm because it Is in the city and all of the things they grow there are organic. One interesting fact is they sell there things on Saturday. A farmer let us smell some oregano.

Mill Creek Farm

What was my prior knowledge about farming?

My prior knowlegde was that there were farms closer than in the country, that they used rain water to water crops, what types of crops were grown in specific months, and that besides just growing edible produce they grew trees and harvested honey from bees.

Was MillCreek Farm similar to other farms?

It was similar because this farm grew an arrangement of fruits and vegatables just like any other farms and had similar ways to water crops; the only difference was that there were no animals and the farm was close by.

How is it different than a typical farm?

A typical farm usually has a tractor, an outhouse, a cattle ranch attached, a farmer in a big house near a barn, and thousands arces of land stacked with animals. The MC farm had bees, no animals, solar panels instead of electricity and a green- healthy toilet.

MILL CREEK FARM

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT THAN A TYPICAL FARM?
MILL CREEK IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE OTHER FARMS HAVE ANIMALS AND GREEN HOUSE .AND MILL CREEK HAVE BEE HIVES AND CROPS COVERED UP AND RESTROOMS OUTSIDE .AlSO ITS IN THE CITY.

ANY INTERESTING FACTS YOU LEARNED AT MCF?
YES I LEARNED THAT THEY HAVE A GREEN ROOF THAT HELP SUCK UP THE RAIN WATER THAT HELP CUT DOWN ENERGY USE.

Mill Creek Farm

  • What was your prior knowledge of the farming ?
I didn't know anything about the farm before today .
  • Was the mill creek similar to what you thought a farm was ? Why or why not ?
No , it wasn't at all similar because I thought it would be much bigger. And in the country.

  • How is it different than a "typical" farm ?
It different from the typical farm because its in the city. Instead of in the country.

  • The things I thought that were interesting at MCF were . . . .
The one thing that I thought was interesting on the farm was their restroom . Because it was environment friendly to save water . Also they didn't use electricity they used glass bottles that were molded into the walls surrounding the room.

Mill creek farm

While visiting the Mill creek farm I had my expectation of the farms appearance. I thought that the farm would have a wide layer of land, animals such as , pigs, cows, chickens and horses. Needless to say my vision was far from the truth. Instead being an animal farm it was an agricultural farm. Full of plants, vegetables, fruits and herbs.
The Mills farm was far from what I was hoping for never the less it was an experience I will never forget. The facilities did seem a little messy for me but the main point of the farm was over powering.
The most interesting thing I found out about the Mill creek farm is that the farm is over a creek. Hence the name Mill creek farm. Also all of the material such as housing and appliances were all helpful for the earth and it saves energy making it an all green farm.

Mill Creek Farm

Although it was blazing hot outside, the group made it to Mill Creek Farm, an urban farm at 49th & Brown. The farmers gave us a tour around and taught us a few things about urban farming, storm water collection, and green architecture.

Mill Creek Fram

My prior knowledge of farming is growing all different types of vegetables and fruits. Also having various types of animals. The Mills Farm was some what similar to what i thought was farming. For example they did have various types of vegetables and fruits. The only thing that it was lacking was the animals. It was different from typical farming by the fact that they had a lot of things recycled and or things to help the environment and also they are located in the city. For example they have a Living Roof or you could call it a Green Roof, which helps the plants grow and also stop the street gutters from getting flooded. Some interesting things I learned about was:

  • Storm water management

  • Creek Mills Farm was there for 5 years

  • Bees help grow fruit trees

  • Green Roofs help cut down energy use

  • Compost toilets helps save water

  • Solar Panels help power up the main building

Urban Archives

There were a lot of very old things there but the oldest thing I saw there was a mad made in the 1920's. Based on the way the people were drised in thre picture the the photos that I looked were very old. Also the way the people handled the food was differect for example there was a man holding a fish wist no gloves on. When it come to the types of markets that hasent changed at all there is still seafood, meat, and fruit markets. Based on the cupon I saw the was 15cent off I think that the food back thin witch was the 1920s was cheaper.

Urban Archives

The Temple Urban Archives was the home of informantion about philadelphia from many years ago some informantion was in the year 1970's going back to the year 1930's. The information and details on event that happen in the temple district was amazing. The archives had all sorts of forms of information such as newspaper clips videos and files on many different people. This place would be the perfect place to recieve information of olden day in philadelphia.

Q and A for the Urban Archives

Q:Which Map is the Clearest?
A:Alas of The City of Philadelphia
Q:What can we learn about Philadelphia Communities from these documents?
A:In 1980 most people where below Poverty
Q:What do these documents tell us about the Reading Terminal Market? Which Source taught you this?
A:The way they handled the food was handled was different for example they use gloves now, but back then they just used their hands

My observation/thoughts I have about the Urban Archives is that it is a very interesting place and also it has a lot of information that I have never known about about Philadelphia and the things that went on in it in the past. I would like to go back and learn more about philadelphia.

THE CLEAREST MAP WAS ALAS OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA.
WHAT CAN WE LEARN ABOUT PHILADELPHIA COMMUNITIES FROM THESE DOCUMENTS?
IS THAT IN 1980 MOST PEOPLE WERE LIVING BELOW THE POVERTY LEVEL.
WHY DID COMMUNITIES HAVE GARDENS?
I THINK COMMUNITIES HAVE GARDENS BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T AFFORD TO BUY GROCERYS AT THEY MARKETS SO THEY MADE SOMETHING EVERYONE CAN AAFORD.

Farmer's market

The farmer's market has corn, cookies and all organic food.
The reading terminal has fish, honey, pies, bread, meat also they sold pre-cooked food.
They have some things the same because the farmer's Market has all organic food and the reading terminal has organic food and much more.

RT Vs. FM

The difference between Temple's Farmer's Market and and Reading Terminal Market is that at the Reading's Market it has more variety. At Temple's Farmer's Market you can only get what they offer at the prices they choose, but at Reading Terminal you can go to different place and compare prices and also see all different types of food from meats to candy, from cookies to fruit, and they even got a spot where they sell clothes. Temple's Farmer's Market also have a limited amount of people who come wich is the people who work or go to school at Temple University unlike Reading Terminal where people from all over the world come and by stuff from there. A place that I would want to shop at is Bassetts which is an Ice cream parlor and also is the oldest store, it was first opened in 1861. Both markets are similar by the simple fact that they have fresh foods and and they do they grow their foods 100% organic instead of farming conventionally like most farmers.

RT/FM

Questions:
1.)What is the oldest store? L.D Bassett is the oldest at the RT
2.)What is the most expensive item at the RT? Cheese was the most expensive item at the RT.
3.)What are the benefits of working at the RT? The only benefits of working there is you get 10% off every item at the RT.
4.)What are the benefits of being at the RT? the benefits are you get a wider verity, the items you get are fresh and organic.

When it come to who sells at the RT all types of people sell from black people to the Asian and the people who buy from there are just are from all around the world. The people who sell at the FM are Amish. The people that I saw that were shopping there were black and white. One thing that was different was the RT was big and well know unlike FM. I would rather go to the RT because it is bigger

Farmer's market

When we took our trip to the farmer's Market, I noticed that some fruits were smaller than I
was used to seeing them this is because these fruits are not made bigger by chemicals. While at the Farmer's Market, I noticed that they sell everyday products but the products are supposed to be better for the body!

Reading Terminal Market VS Farmers market

Farmers
Market

Reading Terminal
Market

The Farmer market and the Reading terminal was two totally different places. A different atmospshere and different people. Even though the two place seem impossible to compare, they did have some similiarties. The differences in the two Markets was space. In the farmers market the space they had was not that big. As for the the reading terminal the space given to the was huge. Giving them more space for more stores and more room for produce. Another difference between the to markets was the atmospshere. In the farmers market it was small and easy to ask questions and recieve answers from the partcipants at the market. While in the terminal it harder to ask question to the store, employees because most of the stores were busy with customers. Also inventory was a big part in the differences. The terminal sold a more variety of food such as meats, clothe, pastries and other item that would be useful. While at the farmers market the inventory seem to be limited to mostly just produce and plants. Similiarity were that ,both markets claim to have fresh and organic produce. Also both markets seem to have help with produce from local farms. Both markets also seem to have no part in conviential farming.

Whose responsibility do you think it is to inform us about what is in our food? Is it our responsibility to find out, the producer’s responsibility to make it more clear, or both? Why do you think so?

I think that it goes hand and hand the producer's have to put a list of all things used to make the food which the buyer can read or not. Most people do not read the label which can cause problems. The buyer is sometimes unable to read the words on the food label which can cause them to eat a food which can cause them to become ill.

Do people have the right to know what is in their food?

Yes, I think people have the right to know what they're eating. It's important for many reasons, such as the ingredients and calories in the packaging. It's also important because a person can be allergic to something that might be in that item .

-Write a personal response to the question of whether healthy eating should be a right, a responsibility, or a privilege?

I think that it's a responsibility to eat right because what you feed your childern is what reflectes on them all their life .
For example, when your kid gets older and want to get married and need you to walk him or her down aisle but you can't because you're on a oxygen machine ,that's why i think health should be a responsibility.

Do people have the right to know what is in their food?

Everyone has the right to know exactly what they put in their body because its their body. No one should be allowed to eat something that can damage their body. There are a lot of dangerous and unknown chemicals in certain foods which people should know about.

Food Inc,

How do you think the way your grandparents used to eat differs from how you eat today ?

My grandparents probably had more fresh fruit then we do now. Most of my family were rasied down south and or new jersey. Down south they mostly plant grow and raise their food. The difference is huge between how my grandparents ate and how we eat now.

1. Post a new list of questions that you plan on asking the FM staff this week. What made you think of them?

Some questions I would ask the Manager or Farmer at the farmers market this week is :

  • What kinds of food would you like to sell that you don't already grow?

  • How long have you been working with the head farmer?

  • How long on average does it take for you to grow your foods?

  • If a big corporation offered you a major contract to produce there foods faster with chemicals and other harmful things would you take the offer?

  • What do you do with the foods you do not sell?

What made me think of these questions was the movie Food Inc. The movie makes you question a lot about where and how your food is being made, Also after the first run of questions it makes it easier to think about other interesting questions people usually don't think about.

2. After having gone to the FM, what makes you interested in going back?

I am interested in going back to the Farmer's Market because I would like to support the farmers who actually care about the peoples well being. Another reason would be to see if the foods at the grocery store tastes different from the foods at the farmers market. Next I would like to be able to get to know more about what they do and how the produce our foods. Lastly I think the fresh food would be better to eat.

-Many of us were surprised to learn that corn is so prevalent in our foods. Why do you think we were so surprised? Why don’t more people know this fact? Do you think the government and food producers have kept it a secret?

I believe people are so surprised is because they think they know exactly what they are eating and where it comes from; what they think they know is really a lie because that is what they were brainwashed to believe from TV. The government and the big businesses don't want people to know this information because it will cause people to worry, and stop buying food therefore making the business and government lose money. I do believe the government have kept it a secret because everyday people keep continuing to buy the food that they produce and put their lives on the line.

-Whose responsibility do you think it is to inform us about what is in our food? Is it our responsibility to find out, the producer’s responsibility to make it more clear, or both? Why do you think so?

I believe it is the government and the Food Safety Board to inform us what we are eating because some people might be allergic. It is our responsibility to learn about this food he producers to inform us more about the food that we eat; This is important because most people want to know the risks of eating this food and the procedures used to make them.

1.Do animals have the right to a certain quality of life?

2.Do people have the right to know what is in their food?

1. Animals should had the same quality of life that was intended to them when born. Such as having a wide open range. A field of grass beneath their feet. Also abundance of water from a lake and or river. I believe if these aspect of an environment that is perfect for a chicken and or cow. And if this qualities is taken from the animals, it would resolute in side effects that are may considered abnormal attributes. The abnormal attributes are the foreign bacteria that is found in the meat of the animal or the low fatigue of the animal limiting the animal to an open field. If given food that the animal would not normally eat the animal could suffer from extreme obesity.

2. People should have the right to know each and every ingredient in food that available to them, because some people may have issues or problems with curtain substances that may effect they're body in ways that could lead to illness. Also a person could be allergic to a substance within the product and they're reaction to the substance could resolute in death. Thus putting the company in a bind that could effect them for life such as leaving them in debt or forcing the company to shut down.
